Who We Are

La Plata SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) is one chapter of a national network of groups and individuals working to undermine white supremacy and to work for racial justice.  La Plata SURJ is accountable to Southwest Movement for Black Lives. Mobilizing and education, SURJ moves white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability.  SURJ provides a space to build relationships, skills and political analysis to act for change. La Plata SURJ is accountable to the Southwest Movement for Black Lives.

Land Acknowledgement

As we begin, we acknowledge that the land we gather on as a congregation, where we live, work and play, was not freely given to us. We gather today on the ancestral lands and territories of the Nuuchu (Ute), Apache, the Pueblo, Hopi, Suni, and the Diné (Navajo) nations.

We recognize the Indigenous peoples as the original stewards of this land. As the words are spoken and heard, the ties Nations have to their traditional homelands are renewed and reaffirmed.

We acknowledge that our use of and benefit from this land came at a dire cost to Native Nations and peoples’ whose land we now inhabit.

We acknowledge our history and responsibility to educate ourselves, always stretching to be better allies to Native communities.

We’re happy you’re here

We all have to start somewhere. Attend a vigil, participate in a meeting, or read educational resources.

When we know better, we do better. We’ve complied out favorite educational tools to help you on your journey.

Together, as part of a powerful multi-racial, cross-class movement for collective liberation we can force the system of white supremacy to crumble. We’re glad to have you join in this work.
